Depth-of-field focus (DOF) is a little more advanced than the roll focus technique we discussed in the last post. This technique is a little more complicated, but can generate fantastic results. Unlike roll focus, DOF is not fixed.
Basically, you’ll select what you want in focus for your shot, and the rest will be out of focus. It’s a great way to make something stand out photographically. While you’ll need to experiment with lenses, settings and lighting to get the result you’re looking for, DOF creates beautiful results.
This style is perfect for your interview sequences. And keep in mind different lenses will have different DOF capabilities. For example, a videographer using a wide angle lens will find most of the shot in focus. Zooming into a telephoto setting, however, requires great precision, as that DOF is shallower. Bright and dim lighting also have bearing on your DOF. The dimmer your light, the shallower your DOF.
