Today, Google announced that they are throwing their video production company hat in the web-TV ring by introducing Google TV.
According to Google’s Blog, Google TV is a device that will seamlessly integrate the internet with your television set, which is something that has been tried many times before but has never really caught on.
Here’s Google’s Blog describing just what Google TV can do…
Google TV is a new experience for television that combines the TV that you already know with the freedom and power of the Internet. With Google Chrome built in, you can access all of your favorite websites and easily move between television and the web. This opens up your TV from a few hundred channels to millions of channels of entertainment across TV and the web. Your television is also no longer confined to showing just video. With the entire Internet in your living room, your TV becomes more than a TV ? it can be a photo slideshow viewer, a gaming console, a music player and much more.
Truthfully, this does sound promising. If Google TV can really open the entire internet, including YouTube, to your TV – it will be a far step ahead of Apple’s very-limited Apple TV, which will only play legally purchased iTunes movies on your home set.
Apparently, Google is working with Sony and Logitech to add Google TV to new sets, Blu-ray systems and companion boxes, and the standalone devices will be available at Best Buy beginning this fall.
