Now that Greenbay’s (bogus) victory is behind us, people can reminisce about the most important part of Superbowl Sunday: the commercials. This year, one Volkswagen commercial sticks out above the rest.
The day after the game, this video production has already had 16 million views on eBay. But why has it resonated so well with audiences? Perhaps the secret is in the video’s simplicity.
Unlike some of the other ads, this commercial used no special effects, half-naked women, or funny dialogue. After all, it’s just a kid trying to use the force. Only one sound effect is used over the music, and it’s the sound of a car starting.
I think businesses might want to go all out when they produce video editing or a commercial (especially a Superbowl spot). But as Volkswagen proves, that’s not always necessary. The glitz and glam can be distracting, but a simple premise and some panning cameras is all that’s really necessary to make a good video.
