For the most part, when producing a commercial or marketing video, hiring Chicago production companies will yield the best results. But there are situations when amateur video would actually be better, and Amazon has discovered one of those situations.
Amidst the popularity of last year’s Kindle commercial contest, Amazon is inviting amateur filmmakers to create a new video production, for the upcoming Kindle 3. Last year’s winners, photographers Angela Kohler and Ithyle Griffiths won with a stop motion video and were hired to make another video for Amazon.
The online retailer wants people to submit a 30 second commercial that would demonstrate the Kindle’s new features and encourage people to buy the device. The winner will receive $15,000 in Amazon gift cards.
The last winner, though an amateur filmmaker, produced a commercial that was both beautiful and effective. It was aired on TV and a lot of the people who saw it probably didn’t even know it was made for a contest. Those who were aware, probably liked it even more.
In this case, people applauded Amazon’s decision to use amateur filmmakers. In the long run, the contest and commercial probably helped drive sales for the Kindle.
