I have noticed that a number of popular vlogs frequently use jump cuts though out the video. For instance, here is a typical Ray William Johnson episode, bursting at the seems with jump cuts.
A jump cut occurs when a video edit removes some kind of action or movement from the footage. In the case of Johnson, he jumps from the left side, to the right side of the screen practically mid-sentence.
Although there are instances in films and videos where jump cuts are necessary or unavoidable, in most instances they are unprofessional and jarring. Their appeal is understandable when your video consists of a talking head, ranting about some meaningless idea that otherwise wouldn’t matter to anyone in the world… but let’s try to avoid them from now on.
