They say never judge a book by its cover. This is probably good advice because cover art is often deceiving or cryptic. But have you ever heard someone say “never judge a book by it’s title?” I haven’t, and I think it’s because titles are important.
Unlike a cover or a poster or a logo, titles don’t really change. The Catcher in the Rye will always be called that, even if different editions of the book have different designs on the cover. That’s why a lot of thought should go into the title of whatever it is you are producing. Even if video editing content lifespan is generally short in the digital age, you never know how popular your post or video production will be. Even if it makes a blip for a week, that blip can effect 100 people or 100,000 people. I’d even wager that you can produce a bigger blip if your work has a compelling title.
A recent post from The Social Media Marketing blog gives some great tips on writing attractive titles for your content.
BE DESCRIPTIVE: It should be obvious that titles give readers an idea about that the accompanying blog post is all about.
STRAIGHT TO THE POINT: Your goal here is to write a title that will describe exactly what you’re saying within your blog post in as few words a possible.
BE CREATIVE: It’s always a good practice to use titles that will pop out of the page, and avoid the ones that can make you sound mechanical and devoid of any character.
PROPER GRAMMAR: Grammatical errors are distracting, and can discourage your readers from even consuming your content.
CHECK FOR DUPLICATES: This is to prevent your post from competing with other content online on the search engines, and to prevent confusion among readers.
